In the last ten years, the EPA passed some of the most rigorous regulations ever established regarding emissions from heavy-duty diesel trucks. The new EPA standards call for reductions in particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) as well as other categories of tailpipe pollutants.

Emission Control Systems at R & D Tires and Service

The good news is that newer systems, equipped with injectors for urea and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) can reduce NOx by as much as 90 percent, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide by 50- 90 percent, and PM emissions by 30-50 percent. These systems are complex, with an entire sensor chain sending feedback to the engine control computer. A problem with any of those sensors can cause your truck's emissions to be out of spec, as can issues at any point in the exhaust stream. While emissions controls aren't necessarily a safety issue, a truck with emissions that are out of spec can run sluggishly, be short on power and torque and can use up to 10-20% more fuel (not to mention being red-tagged for failing an emissions inspection).
